Mayo Community Games were formed 50 years ago in 1973 and to date have been one of the most successful counties in the country. In order for Mayo Community Games to remain strong and vibrant in every community we need a good turnout to continue the good work over the past 5 decades. The year 2023 has proved to be a very successful year for the organisation in Mayo. Hundreds of young participants from 25 affiliated areas competed at local level in Mayo before competing at regional and national level. While success is always welcomed, the most important issue is participation and making new friends in the sport and culture which community games offer to every child from under 6 years up to under 16 years.
It was a great honour for Mayo Community Games to host the National swimming finals in the Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex Castlebar. The event was a great success and we hope that we can host the 2024 finals at the same venue. We also hosted the National Pitch & Putt Golf finals at the majestic setting of Westport Golf Club. There is no reason why Westport Golf Club could not host this event again in 2024 for the third successive year.
Community Games offers over 53 events which include individual and team events. We cater for the sporting side and also the culture's side of the games. Please visit the community games website at www.communitygames.ie to fully explore what your child can compete in during 2024.
Now is the time to start preparing for next year by holding your local AGM and start off by planning what you want to get involved in. Mayo Community Games are there to assist areas who are experiencing difficulties in setting up an existing area or simply starting a new one.
We now look forward to seeing a large attendance at the AGM on Thursday 16th November in the Community Resource Centre Balla Castlebar at 8pm. Full reports will be given concerning the various functions of the organisation during 2023.
