A young footballer with strong Erris roots has helped the Ireland U17 team progress to the next round of qualifying for the UEFA European Under-17s Championships.
A 0-0 draw with Switzerland at Turner’s Cross on Tuesday night was enough to help Colin O’Brien’s side through.
The Western People is reporting that Derby County’s Niall McAndrew played in midfield, and was in the right place to block two shots on the line and that kept the game scoreless.
It was an emotional week for McAndrew as he was just back from a ACL/MCL injury and his grandfather Pat McAndrew, originally from Townaugh Bangor Erris, passed away at Derby Royal Hospital at the age of 89 on October 5.
