A young North Mayo man has helped Ireland to dominate a field of 16 nations and win the FEI European Show Jumping Young Riders Championship in Gorla Minore, Italy.
Ciaran Nallon from Knockmore was part of a five-strong Irish team that was superb all week and, led by Team Manager James Kernan, stamped their authority in Friday’s final round to win the competition for the first time since Millstreet in 2016.
Nallon was joined on the U21 Irish team by Rhys Williams, Niamh McEvoy, Seamus Hughes Kennedy and Max Wachman, and going into the final round they had a dropped fence to spare over their nearest pursuer, Britain, who were second on 10.41, with Belgium in third on 11.09. It wasn’t needed, however, and when all the jumping was done and dusted Ireland stood clear on 2.5 points, with Belgian way back on 15.09 and third-placed Britain on 18.41.
