Mayo GAA joint-hurling managers Dave McConn and Tom Phillips have announced their captain and vice-captain for the 2023 season.
Former PwC Nicky Rackard All-Star David Kenny will captain Mayo for the Christy Ring championship, which starts this Sunday, April 16 with an away tie against Meath at 2pm in Navan. St. Jude’s stalwart Ger McManus, whose father is from Barnacarroll outside Claremorris will be vice-captain of the Mayo GAA senior hurlers this year.
A duel star with his club and at underage with Mayo, Kenny takes over from his club mate Shane Boland, who missed all of Mayo’s Allianz National Hurling league due to injury.
A decorated club and county player, Kenny collected the man-of-the-match accolade for his outstanding performance in the 2013 All-Ireland minor football final. He also won an All-Ireland U21 medal with Mayo in 2016 and a Nicky Rackard All-Ireland hurling medal that same year. Kenny also featured on the Mayo senior football panel under Stephen Rochford, playing in the FBD league that year.
The twenty seven year old teacher has featured for both Tooreen and Aghamore at senior level for the past number of years. He also won two Mayo GAA U21A titles with his club in 2015 and 2016.
Mayo have a very competitive Christy Ring championship group with Meath, London, Sligo, Tyrone and Derry all in contention.
Mayo begin their campaign with a trip to Meath on Sunday a game which can be heard live on Midwest Radio.
