Lee Keegan has announced his retirement from inter county football.
This comes following a statement from Mayo GAA on their website this morning.
Keegan made 73 league and 67 championship appearances for Mayo throughout his career, and his total of 140 appearances leaves him in fifth place in the county’s all time list (behind Andy Moran, Keith Higgins, Aidan O’Shea and Kevin McLoughlin).
His last game for Mayo came on June 26 2022, in Croke Park against Kerry in the All Ireland SFC quarter final.
The Westport native won 5 All Star awards, as well as being awarded Footballer of the Year in 2016.
His medal and trophy cabinet also includes 7 Connacht SFC titles, a National League title as well as the 2009 Connacht U21 title.
In a statement from Mayo senior football manager Kevin McStay, he said:
“Lee has represented Mayo with great distinction. He was indestructible and defiant: on the biggest days, he walked tall and proud. Lee embodied the resilience of Mayo. The example he set will continue to inspire Mayo for many years to come.”
