McHale is part of Kevin McStay's backroom team for the Mayo senior footballers and following a meeting with Belmullet Chairperson Pat Cowman the club released the following statement:
A meeting has taken place between CLG Béal an Mhuirtead chairperson Pat Cowman and Liam McHale in relation to his role as senior football manager. After much discussion it was agreed that it's in the best interest of all parties involved that Liam leaves his role with the club due to his commitments with Mayo in 2023. We would like to thank Liam and his backroom team for their hard work and commitment through 2022, and wish him the very best going forward in his role with the Mayo senior football team.
