Reigning European women’s boxing champion, Aoife O’Rourke, is one bout away from a medal at this year’s championships after opening the defence of her title with a victory in Montenegro yesterday afternoon.
The Olympian from Tarmon, Castlerea, comfortably defeated Vasilki Stavridou from Greece in the preliminaries of the middleweight (75kgs) competition.
The Tarmon woman will now meet Busra Isildar from Turkey in the quarter-finals next Wednesday where another victory will guarantee her a bronze medal at least.
O’Rourke is the reigning European champion after winning the gold medal in Madrid in 2019.
