The B&J Chambers Mayo Even Ages Cross Country Championships and Senior Masters League second leg took place at Ballinrobe Racecourse on Sunday last October 9.
According to Mayo Athletics Co Board report “lashing rain and driving wind made things very difficult for athletes and officials. For some it was their first time competing, for others it was a chance to get out there and give it your best shot.”
The amalgamation of different age groups and categories enabled the officials get through the busy programme.
Mayo AC had ten runners conpeting in this second leg – six women and four men. After their excellent winning efforts the previous day in Céide Coast Half, Colette Tuohy and Paula Donnellan were out in action again in the 4k women’s race. Colette finished second to Aoibhinn Flatley Swinford AC, with Paula 3rd, Pauline Moran 5th, Dee Corcoran 6th, Noreen McManamon 8th and Joan Walsh 10th. John Jennings also completed the 4k, the only competitor in the men’s O65 category.
In the men’s 6k Brian Renton Westport AC finished first. Mike Griffin led the Mayo runners home in third, with Anto Devaney 7th and Darren Brewer 8th.
Well done to all!
Thanks are due to event hosts Lake District AC, John Flannelly and committee Ballinrobe Racecourse for use of their facilities, the Civil Defence, and not least Co Board officials.
