Castlebar Community Games has been around for decades for children to participate in a safe and caring environment. Its aims were to provide opportunities for young children between the ages of 6 years to 16 years to develop the experience of taking part in our cultural and sporting games and activities. Making friends was part and parcel of the community games tradition over the years. Remaining active and healthy was also a major priority.
So many children enjoyed the success of competing at local level before advancing to the county, provincial and national finals. Hundreds of children will remember the winning of medals and the losing of finals.
Castlebar Community Games have a proud tradition of taking part throughout the years when the girls rounders teams were the best in Ireland. We can also recall the success of our competitors and the celebrations that followed in soccer , gaelic , chess, golf, art, swimming, gymnastics, model making, athletics, basketball and culture events etc.
Over the past 6 weeks Castlebar Community Games have appealed to members of the general public and sporting organisations to step forward and form a committee to save the sporting and cultural organisation in the town. The first public meeting was held in February and nobody attended the meeting. Another public meeting was held on the 7th April with three people attending. A number of expressions of interest were received and some positions were filled on the night as a result. Unfortunately the meeting did not receive enough support to fill the remaining positions for a working committee to function for the 2022 season.
The meeting ended with the bad news that there will be no Community Games events in Castlebar for 2022.
This decision will have far reaching consequences for many young competitors in the Castlebar Community Games area. A spokesperson for the community games stated that every organisation was now experiencing a lack of volunteers to help out, and that many more organisations will simply fold if they don't receive the voluntary support they require to continue the great work being done every week to keep our youth involved in sport and other non sporting activities. The Castlebar Community Games facebook account will continue to function with items concerning community games at all levels.
