Belcarra native and Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Luke McNicholas has been called up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad for their upcoming game with Sweden.

McNicholas, who has caught the eye while on loan at Northern Ireland side Cliftonville in recent months, will travel with the 21-man squad to Boras for the crucial U21 2023 European Championship qualifier.

The young Boys in Green resume their campaign to qualify for the tournament that takes place in Georgia & Romania after finishing off 2021 with a win against top-of-the-table Sweden to hang onto third in Group F. Ollie O’Neill’s 92nd-minute goal won the reserve fixture for Ireland in Tallaght in November. They will now do battle with Sweden once again next Tuesday.
