A Ballina woman captained the first ever Irish Ultimate Frisbee team to win an international tournament.

Sarah Melvin was a key member in the 21 women squad who won gold in the European Ultimate Frisbee Championships, in Hungary.

The closest an Irish team has come to gold in the past was with silver medals in mixed competitions in 2013 and 2015 and in the men’s U20’s in 2017.

The sport is non-contact and has been described as a mix between American football and Frisbee throwing.
