Eager to compete against the best in the country, a group of Moy Valley Athletic Club athletes made the trip to Rathfarnham for the illustrious Rathfarnham 5k, one of the biggest and fastest 5k races in the country. The race has a reputation of enabling fast times and attracting fast athletes. This year's race had 946 finishers on the day and the Moy Valley finishers all posted personal bests for 5k on the road.

The race was won by Irish International Kevin Dooney in a blistering 14:29. Keelan Kilrehill finished in 8th place overall in 15:04 and was first junior man to cross the line. It was a magnificent gutsy yet fluid run for Keelan to be able to compete at this level and inspire his team to excel also.

Next for the Moy Valley athletes was Kevin Maye who posted a time of 16:11. Kevin has seen his times tumble in recent months and this is testament to his dedication to training. Only eight seconds behind Kevin was Cormac McDermott who put in a personal best performance over 5k to cross the line in 16:19, a great run from the Leaving Cert student!

When you compete in a team competition, you want everyone to contribute to the collective effort and there were no better team members than Conor McLoughlin and Luke Johnson. Conor put in his typical heart and soul effort to post a time of 17:16 and Luke kept Conor in his sights to finish in 17:30. The accumulated times decided where the prizes were going and with five athletes coming in under 17:30, Moy Valley AC were hopeful they were in the shake-up. There was delight when it was announced that the Junior Men’s team of Keelan Kilrehill, Cormac McDermott, Conor McLoughlin and Luke Johnson won the Junior Men’s team race and indeed were fourth team overall.

Eager to participate, Brendan Kilrehill also completed the race. Coach Philip Finnerty had the team well prepared for the race and all should be looking forward the cross country season just underway.

Training for Moy Valley Athletic Club takes place for over 7’s on the cross country course in Belleek and Ballina Town FC astro turf pitch at 6:30 pm every Monday and Wednesday. Mini athletics for six year olds takes place at 6:30 pm on a Friday in the gym at St.Muredach’s College.
