Victim support services claim CCTV in taxis is just one step on the road to protecting passengers from sexual abuse.
The plan, to require taxis to have CCTV, is being considered by the National Transport Authority, with the backing of Junior Transport Minister James Lawless.
It comes in the wake of taxi driver Raymond Shorten's sentencing for the rape of two female passengers in 2022.
