A number of “Age-friendly” parking spaces have been installed in the town of Castlebar.

They are located at the Market Square car park and on Main Street.

The spaces, painted gold, are subject to the usual parking charges and are similar to mother and baby car parking spaces in supermarkets.

Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere has been a key campaigner of the initiative to make the town more inclusive. Over the last number of years, he has lobbied at Municipal District level for the development.

He is urging drivers to respect these new courtesy spaces and leave them free for older people in the community who need them.
