Over the last five years, 195 people died at Galway University Hospital Emergency Department (ED) on trolleys , there were 150 deaths in the ED at Sligo University Hospital - 117 patients died on trolleys in the ED at Mayo University Hospital, 108 patients at Letterkenny University Hospital and 72 people died on trolleys in the ED at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe.
These figures were presented by HSE management to this week’s Regional Health Forum West.
239 people died on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick over the last five years. The figures were presented to the Forum following the inquest into the death of 16-year old Aoife Johnston at University Hospital Limerick in December of 2022.
The inquest last month returned a verdict of 'medical misadventure'.
The figures presented to the Forum included only patients deemed unwell enough to be admitted and who died on a trolley in the ED while waiting for a bed.
It does not include patients who passed away by the time they arrived in ED or were critically unwell and were brought directly to resuscitation following an accident or sudden illness.
