The death has occurred of Mayo born former Labour TD Emmet Stagg, who passed away aged 79.

Originally from Hollymount, he died peacefully on St. Patrick’s Day at St. Brigid’s Hospital in The Curragh.

Emmet Stagg served as a Dáil Deputy for a total of 29 years, representing the constituencies of Kildare and Kildare North between 1987 and 2016.

Twice he served as Minister of State in a Rainbow Coalition Government composed of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Democratic Left.

He was born in Hollymount, and educated at Ballinrobe CBS and Kevin Street College of Technology.

Mr. Stagg was one of thirteen siblings, and most recently lived in Straffan, County Kildare.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Mary, son Henry, daughter Gillian, and the rest of his loving family and wide circle of friends.

His remains will repose at Reilly’s Funeral Home in Maynooth tomorrow from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.

Funeral Mass takes place on Thursday in St. Brigid’s Church, Straffan at 12 noon.

Burial takes place afterwards in Straffan Cemetery.
