The European Commission has recommended reducing the EU's net greenhouse gas emissions by 90 per cent by 2040.

It's in a bid to ensure the European Union reaches climate neutrality by 2050.

In a statement, the commission says achieving the target would ensure predictability for citizens, businesses and investors.

It would also avoid what it describes as wasted investments on the fossil fuel economy.
