The Government has agreed to 6 million euro in funding for local radio and newspapers.
Money will be targeted to two schemes that would support local democracy reporting and court reporting.
Subject to EU approval, the Government hopes to see the schemes up and running by the local and European elections next year.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says it's important to have quality local media.
