If emergency funding isn't provided to nursing homes such as St. Brendan's, many more will have to shut their doors.
That's the strong view of Achill based councillor Paul McNamara.
The Fianna Fail councillor raised the issue at yesterday's meeting of the West Mayo MD.
He says that the service, which in total caters for around 40 residents between high and low levels of support, is also a major employer in the area.
The nursing home receives 60% funding from the HSE while a HSE run home receives the full 100%.
Councillor McNamara told Midwest News that it's inevitable if those private and voluntary homes do not get emergency government support many will have to close their doors......
