The Heritage Officer for Mayo told this week’s monthly meeting of Ballina Municipal District that a request for funding to secure the integrity of the Augustinian Abbey structure in Ballina will be a priority in 2024.

Deirdre Cunningham was responding to a call from Independent councillor Mark Duffy calling on Mayo County Council to prioritise the Abbey for urgent conservation and repair works due to its cultural significance and its present state of deterioration.

The abbey is located beside St Muradech’s Cathedral in Ballina.

Funding for the structure’s conservation had been sought by the local authority from government last year, but failed.

Councillor Duffy told Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley that he believes by prioritizing the request for funding in 2024, the application will be more successful:
