Inflation was 6.6 per cent, down from an annual increase of 7.2 per cent in the 12 months to April.

The divisions with the largest increases over the year were housing, water, electricity , gas and other fuels , up over 16 per cent.

Food and non-alcoholic drink increased by almost 13 per cent, according to the CSO.

Over the year there was a decrease in education and transport costs.
