22 patients at Mayo University Hospital were injured by falls from beds, chairs and trolleys at the facility in the first four and a half months of this year.
That figure was confirmed by HSE Management in response to a question from the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar, Michael Kilcoyne.
The Cathaoirleach is a member of the HSE West Regional Forum, and he questioned the number of injuries from falls from beds, trolleys and chairs sustained by patients at MUH, in light of complaints that he had received from concerned relatives of patients.
HSE management explained that steps are in place to avoid similar incidents.
Cathaoirleach Kilcoyne told Midwest News Editor Teresa O'Malley that the number of patients injured in this way, so far this year, surprised him and he believes that more urgent steps are needed by hospital management to ensure the problem is addressed.
