The Minister for Agriculture needs to increase the Sheep Welfare Scheme to €20 per ewe in order to keep sheep farming sustainable.
That’s the view of Erris based Sinn Féín TD Rose Conway Walsh.
Currently, sheep farmers are only receiving €7 per ewe and are finding themselves in situations where it is costing them money rather than making them money.
Deputy Conway-Walsh says that while she supports and welcomes the new lime initiative introduced by Minister McConalogue, more needs to be done to support struggling farmers.
