A local community group in Newport who have campaigned to enhance safety along one of the town’s main streets for pedestrians, appear to have succeeded in their objective.

Members of George’s St Newport Concern Group have been highlighting the serious risk to pedestrians of all ages, trying to make their way along a street that links the town centre to the local national school, along a busy stretch of the N59 main road from Newport to Mulranny.

Three members of the campaign group attended yesterday’s West Mayo Municipal District meeting in Westport, as councillors were informed in a report that safety works on George’s Street will get underway by Autumn of this year.

Elaine McCaffrey was one of the campaigners in attendance and afterwards she spoke to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley about the relief and hope that the historic problem with the town’s street will soon be safer for pedestrians....
