New research shows that only about a quarter of teachers who teach computer science at Leaving Cert level have Teaching Council accreditation to teach the subject.

That’s according to this morning’s Irish Times.

The report comes from the University of Galway, which found there was a perception in schools that other Leaving Cert subjects introduced in recent years were easier to roll out than computer science

The Google funded research  showed only 15 percent of schools offered computer science, a subject first introduced on a trial basis in 2018.

140 teachers offer the subject, according to the report, with just 34 accredited to teach the subject by the Teaching Council.

This had been described as a barrier to children in all schools having access to take the subject, according to researchers.
