An investigation is underway after a man's body was found in a house outside Castlebar.
The discovery was made during a fire yesterday evening at a house located on the Westport Road outside the county town.
Gardai and Emergency Services were alerted to a fire, which broke out at a house at Pheasanthill, shortly after 6.30 pm.
When they arrived they found the man's body inside the house.
The man’s name has not been released but it’s understood that he was in his eighties and had been shot a number of times.
Gardaí subsequently commenced a murder investigation.
The scene was sealed off, and remains preserved this morning pending the arrival of a state pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau.
The victim's body remains at the scene.
A short time after the discovery of the man’s body, gardaí arrested a man in his 60s on suspicion of murder.
He is being detained today at Castlebar Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
