A Special Taskforce to deal with what has been described as unprecedented challenges facing Gardaí needs to be set up as a matter of urgency.

The Garda Representative Association says its establishment is crucial to deal with rising assaults on its members.

It has formally written to the Taoiseach, Minister for Justice and the Tanaiste to request an urgent meeting to discuss its creation and formation.
