Tributes have been pouring in for the late Fr. Michéal MacGréil.

Fr Mícheál was a renowned campaigner, activist, lecturer and sociologist in his capacity as a priest and in paying tribute, a statement from St Mary’s Church Westport have described him as “a unique individual, a great and devoted priest, an activist and voice for the marginalised and underprivileged as well as being a proud Mayo and Westport man.”

In his 93rd year, St Mary’s added that Fr Mícheál “lived life to the full and to the end” and that “he will be greatly missed”.

Fr Mícheál MacGréil had spent most of his working life in the east of the country but never lost touch with his Westport and Mayo roots or his family.

A prolific author, he wrote the biography of Monsignor James Horan.

Fr. MacGréil was central to reviving the traditional Patrician pilgrimage in Máméan.

Westport Councillor and friend of the late Fr. Micheál MacGréil Cllr. Brendan Mulroy paid this tribute today.

Fr. Michéal’s remains will repose at the CushloughCommunity Centre on Wednesday evening from 5pm until 8pm.

He will be laid to rest on Thursday morning in Aughvale cemetery following 1pm requiem mass in St. Mary’s Church.
