A Westport councillor is appealing for caution when members of the general public decide to post on social media photos of road traffic collisions or any emergency situations.

Independent councillor Christy Hyland says he is aware of a recent incident where a family became aware of a family member being involved in a serious road collision, after a friend rang to inform them that they had seen the picture on a social media site.

Councillor Hyland says this wrong and completely unfair to families and adds additional stress in already difficult situations.

He is calling on what he terms these “keyboard warriors” to desist from posting disturbing images that have the potential to cause unnecessary stress.

In addition he is calling for legislation to stop these social media postings.
