An extensive search operation is underway in Crossmolina since yesterday afternoon, after a man was reported as missing in the area.

The missing man is aged in his late 60s.

The search is concentrated near the Knockadine Bridge in Crossmolina

Gardaí, civil defence personnel and the coastguard together with a number of rescue teams, including the River Moy Search & Rescue, the Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club and the Underwater Search Unit and a team of boat handlers from the western division of the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service are all involved in the search operation, together with local volunteers.

A search helicopter has also been mobilised in the area.

Garda Superintent Gary Walsh told Midwest News that a search in the River Moy area of Ballina earlier today and yesterday evening has been stood down. That search was undertaken after a passerby noticed something suspicious in the water, at the same time gardai were investigating a report of a man missing in the Foxford area, however, that man has subsequently been located safe and well.

The search for the missing Crossmolina man is continuing.
