The final litter survey of 2022 by business group Irish Business Against Litter shows Castlebar among the cleanest towns in the country, rising from 11th to 4th spot in the ranking of 40 towns and cities nationwide.
An Taisce conducted the survey on behalf of IBAL. Its report for Castlebar stated:
Another excellent result for Castlebar, which makes it one of the cleanest towns in the country. Nine out of the ten sites surveyed got the top litter grade and there were no seriously littered sites. Examples of these included Castlebar Courthouse, Castlebar Library, the Main Street and Market Square – these sites were not just good with regard to litter but were exceptionally well presented and maintained with all aspects associated with same in very good order e.g., paving, signage, street bins, planted areas etc.
Sligo, Galway City Centre and Roscommon have all been classed as clean to European norms, ranking 17,19 and 26 respectively.
