A county Mayo student has won the “2022 SURE Network Award for Best Oral Presentation”, at this year’s Science Undergraduate Research Experience Network Conference.
Colette Collins from Carrowmore Lacken, Co Mayo, won the national award for her research presentation entitled ‘Exploring the relationship between the menstrual cycle and markers of physical performance in inter county Ladies Gaelic Football players.’
She graduated with a degree in Science this year at the ATU in Galway.
20 inter county players were recruited during their pre season training phase for the study.
As part of the study, players were tested with a 20m sprint test and a maximal jump height test over two distinct phases of the menstrual cycle – the early follicular phase (1-5 days) and the mid-luteal phase (20-25 days).
Overall, participants were found to have a significantly slower sprint time in the early follicular phase in comparison to the latter, with no difference in jump height observed.
