A Sligo councillor has called for the establishment of a dedicated agency to deal with houses and apartments affected by building defects.

Fianna Fail councillor Donal Gilroy says that currently, if a house is found in breach of a building regulation, it is the responsibility of the home owner and not the architect, engineer or construction worker who may have signed it off.

He says that a proper system needs to be introduced as a matter of urgency.
