The lack of places available for people to study veterinary medicine is a situation that needs to addressed.

That's the view of Sinn Fein TD Rose Conway Walsh.

Currently in Ireland, UCD is the only college to have a veterinary school and only offer 80 places.

The Deputy has called for the establishment of such a school in the West of Ireland.

Additionally, she says an apprenticeship type programme should be rolled out as there are many students who have grown up on farms around animals all their lives that may not have the academic background to get a place in such courses.
