Minister Heather Humphreys has confirmed to Mayo deputy Michael Ring that people on training courses, having previously been in receipt of a Disability Allowance payment, will receive the €500 Disability Support Grant.
The Department of Social Protection has delivered the Disability Support Grant to recipients of Disability Allowance. However, when undertaking training courses, recipients of Disability Allowance move off the Department’s payment systems and transfer to a Department of Further and Higher Education, funded Training Allowance and as a consequence, it was not possible to process early payment of the Disability Support Grant to these recipients in the same manner.
The Fine Gael deputy told Midwest News this morning that officials in the Department of Social Protection are examining this issue in conjunction with their colleagues in the Department of Further and Higher Education to ensure the payment is made to those who are on Training courses as soon as possible.”
Deputy Ring concluded, “People with disabilities who choose to train and educate themselves further should not be treated differently than other people with a disability. I am pleased that this matter is being addressed and payment will be made as soon as possible to those eligible”.
