Road signage thieves are back on the prowl in parts of county Mayo.

Directional and Road Safety signs in the Carnacon and Moorehall areas have been taken from their poles in the last three weeks.

The removal of road signs is also occurring sporadically in Robeen, Ballyglass and  Ballintubber

The issue was highlighted by Councillor Al McDonnell, at a recent meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.

The councillor says the removal of road safety signs, like Yield and Stop signs, could potentially be fatal for road users, while the removal of directional signs is a real problem for visitors to the area looking for locations like Moorehall and the signs indicating Ballinrobe, Castlebar or Claremorris.

The poles on which the signage was erected, he explained, are being left bare.

Cllr McDonnell has been speaking to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley about this issue that occurred some years ago in the area, but eventually stopped. However, the problem is occurring again...
