There has been a 250 per cent increase in young people admitted to psychiatric units for eating disorders over the last three years.

That's according to figures from the Health Research Board, which shows there were 116 admissions in 2021, compared to 33 in 2018.

Overall, there was an increase in the number of admissions to psychiatric inpatient facilities last year.

Depression continues to be the most common diagnosis across all cases admitted, followed by schizophrenia.
