A rescue effort is continuing this morning off the North Mayo coast for a man - trapped in a sea-cave at overnight.

He was one of two people, cut off by a rising tide yesterday evening.

A group of kayakers who were in the area at the time, brought a woman to safety yesterday evening - but rescuers were unable to reach the man.

He managed to reach a ledge above water at the back of the cave, and was continuing to respond to rescuers shining lights into the cave during the night.

High swells are continuing to make access to the cave difficult.

The RNLI Lifeboat from Ballyglass has been joined by Coast Guard personnel from Killala, along with gardaí, Civil Defence teams and local fire and ambulance crews for the ongoing rescue operation.
