The Taoiseach has offered condolences to the families and friends of a Roscommon man and his sister who drowned tragically in County Kerry on Thursday evening last.

They have been named as 52 years old  Desmond Byrne of Lecarrow, in county Roscommon and 62 year old Muriel Eriksson with an address in Malmo, Sweden. They had been visiting the Kerry area at the time.

It's understood Mr Byrne had heroically gone to the assistance of his sister, who got into difficulty while swimming at Ballybunion.

The alarm was raised by a teenager on the beach, and rescue services were engaged, but both were pronounced dead a short time later.

Communities in Roscommon and Kerry have been left shocked and saddened by the double tragedy.

Desmond of Carrigean Mór, Lecarrow, and formerly of Baylough, Athlone, Co. Westmeath will repose alongside his sister Muriel, at his home on Monday evening (August 8th) from 4 o'clock until 8 o'clock.

Removal on Tuesday morning (August 9th) to St John's Church, Lecarrow arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in the local cemetery.
