Martin Rafferty, the Glenamaddy, Co Galway-born tycoon, left a gross estate of more than €37m , according to papers lodged in the Probate Office in Dublin.

The Irish Independent is reporting that he left the bulk of his fortune in trust in the name of his wife, who predeceased him, five sons and their families.

The son of a publican in a village of 150 people — with 12 pubs — he spent three years running the family business after his father and mother died within a short time of each other. “That was a major influence on my later career,” he would tell Ivor Kenny for his book, Out on Their Own.
