The county has a new Independent Cathaoirleach.

Knockmore based, Seamus Weir was elected unopposed for the position at yesterday’s AGM of Mayo County Council which took place in Mount Falcon Hotel, Ballina.

The Cathoairleach of Castlebar, another Independent councillor -  Michael Kilcoyne is the new Leas-cathaoirleach of the authority.

This is the second time Councillor Weir has held the position of county Cathaoirleach , however on the last occasion in 200,7 he was a Fine Gael councillor.

Councillor Weir takes over the chain at the helm of the county council from Swinford based Fianna Fail councillor Councillor Michael Smyth.
