West Mayo Municipal District has a new Cathaoirleach.

Independent councillor Christy Hyland was elected, unopposed at today's AGM of the Municipal District. He takes the chain from Fianna Fail councillor Brendan Mulroy.

Mayo now has three independent Cathaoirligh - Christy Hyland in West Mayo, Mark Duffy in the Ballina Municipal District and Michael Kilcoyne in the Castlebar Municipal District.

The Leas-Cathaoirleach in West Mayo is Fianna Fail's Sean Carey.

There was extensive discussion at today's AGM about what many councillors referred to as the "mismatch" of putting two distinct areas like Westport and Belmullet Municipal Districts into one District - West Mayo.

Councillors outside the immediate Westport area stated strongly that more rural regions lose out in such a mix.
