The sharp rise in construction materials, such as tarmac, stone and cement, will significantly hamper Mayo Co Council’s roads programme this year.
Council management told a recent monthly meeting of the West Mayo municipal district that the price of building materials has increased by about a third (30-40%) during the last number of months.
Achill-based Fianna Fáil Cllr Paul McNamara asked how this price increase is likely to impact on proposed road works in the county this year.
Management explained that it’s difficult to quantify the effect that the rise will have on the roads programme but believe it will not be possible to deliver all the works that were budgeted for.
