Independent Cathaoirligh were elected, unopposed, yesterday for both Castlebar and Ballina Municipal Districts

Independent councillor Mark Duffy has, for the first time, been elected as the Cathaoirleach of the Ballina Municipal District.  While, Independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne is the newly elected Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District. Its the fourth time in nine years that he has held the position.

Both men were elected at yesterday’s AGMs of both districts.

 Cathaoirleach Kilcoyne has spearheaded a recent effort to identify the need for affordable housing in the county. To date almost 800 people have applied to be considered for such a scheme, despite no such scheme being available in the county.

He says housing, is regularly raised at Castlebar Municipal meetings  and it will be a top priority for him during his year as the Cathaoirleach...


Fianna Fail’s councillor Michael Loftus is the new Leas-Cathaoirleach of Ballina Municipal District, while Fianna Fail Councillor Blackie Gavin is the new Leas-Cathaoirleachof Castlebar Municipal District.
