Two new state of the art elective orthopaedic theatres at Merlin Park Hospital in Galway have been opened today .
The original theatres were forced to close in 2017 due to a leaking roof.
Galway TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegare Naughton says when the original theatres closed some years ago, she immediately engaged with the then Minister for Health, Simon Harris, and subsequently Minister Donnelly, in order to secure funding for the new theatres.
They are now open for the benefit of those awaiting orthopaedic surgery in Galway and across the western region.
This new build will increase capacity, reduce waiting lists and waiting times for elective procedures.
Minister Naughton says the new facilities exceed the operating capacity of the previous orthopaedic theatre building and will ensure better outcomes for patients and better conditions for staff.
