Cannibis, cocaine and ecstasy are the most prevalent drugs in Mayo at present.

That’s according to Garda Supt Joe McKenna.

Over the past two years, the Garda drugs unit in Mayo has seized 2.2 million euro worth of illegal drugs.

Supt McKenna was speaking at today’s Joint Policing Committee Meeting for Mayo.

Westport councillor Christy Hyland complimented the work of the Garda drugs unit in the county, but he urged garda authorities not to reduce any resources to the unit.

The Independent councillor claims that the level of drug use by teenagers in the county continues to be a major issue and he said much more needs to be done to address a growing problem.
