Residents on the Aran Islands are dealing with the implications of a loss of electricity for more than 24 hours.

A cable supplying power to the three islands was severed by what ESB networks describes as a "third party" on Wednesday afternoon..

It is understood that construction work in the area led to an overhead line being damaged.

This resulted in power outages across the islands with around 800 customers initially impacted.

While power has since been restored there has been thousands of euro worth of food produce lost as a result of the unplanned outage.

Meanwhile, this morning ESB crews are working to restore power to homes in the Enniscrone area.

Over 400 ESB Customers are currently without power in the Enniscrone area due to a fault which occurred in the early hours of this morning but they hope to have it restored by 9:30am this morning.
