The new Headquarters of Music West, the Mayo Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA)  will be officially opened tomorrow (Sat) in Castlebar.

The spacious facility is a county hub of performing arts and is located at Breaffy Road Retail Park, in the county town.

Music West incorporates Mayo Concert Orchestra, Mayo Youth Orchestra and Castlebar Concert Band, and it provides a home for a number choirs and bands, and provides music lessons and vocal training among other services.

The official opening of the state of the art new facility will be performed by Mayo Deputy Michael Ring at 1pm, and everyone is invited to be entertained by musical performances from 12.30 pm tomorrow afternoon, and see first-hand the new facility.

A major step towards Music West establishing its own place was taken when a significant contribution from Castlebar Development Association helped secure the purchase of Unit 19 at Breaffy Road Retail Park, as did donations from Castlebar Lions Club and the Stephen Garvey Memorial Committee.

Leader funding approved by the South West Mayo Development Company, Newport, in conjunction with Mayo County Council, Tús and the Department of Rural and Community Development was then used to kit out the building appropriately.

Mayo Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) members Declan Hynes and Sean Gavin  have been telling Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley more about Music West and tomorrow’s official opening..
