Castlerea native Lisa O’Rourke is to be granted the Freedom of Roscommon in recognition of the honour she has brought to her home county, following her World Boxing Championship win in Istanbul last week

Standing Orders were suspended at this week’s monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council and Castlerea councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice made the proposal to honour the county Roscommon woman and it was unanimously supported by all councillors present.

The Chief Executive of the authority, Eugene Cummins, described the world boxing champion as “a huge example of determination and belief” and also paid tribute to her older sister, Aoife, on her boxing achievements.

Tributes were also paid to the many volunteers, coaches and mentors who have contributed to the success of Irish boxing on the world stage, including the volunteers in Castlerea Boxing Club, where both Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke first started the sport.

Councillor Fitzmaurice told Midwest Radio’s Alanah Nolan that awarding the Freedom of Roscommon to Lisa will recognise the significance of her achievement...
