Roscommon Fianna Fail senator Eugene Murphy revealed yesterday that he has slept in his car twice recently because of the lack of hotel rooms in the capital.
Dublin hotels are under pressure due to the return of international tourism and the Government using hotels to accommodate Ukrainian refugees who have escaped the Russian invasion.
He said that he is aware of a small number of TDs and Senators who have slept in their cars in recent months.
Senator Murphy claims he has slept in his car near petrol stations outside Dublin after failing to book a hotel room..
TDs and Senators are entitled to an overnight allowance of €120 to pay for accommodation while carrying out their duties in Dublin.
Senator Murphy said that "on a point of principle" he wouldn't pay over €200 for a hotel which is why he has not tried to book some of the more expensive hotels in the capital.
The Fianna Fail TD admitted, however, that he did not try to book a B&B or guest house before he slept in his car but he will try that route in the future.
The Senator said he is aware of at least one politician who has slept in their car inside the gates of Leinster House and claimed there is a "small number" of TDs who sleep overnight in their cars because they can't find a hotel room.
